Gerard Malanga was a key member of Andy Warhol’s Factory, famously shooting the screen tests from 1963 to 1966, which chronicled the style, scene and personalities of the artists, actors, partiers, poets, and nobodies who made the Factory the center of New York’s cultural landscape. After leaving the Factory in 1970, Malanga continued his career as a photographer documenting key poets, artists, and writers around the United States. For Fall Winter 2009, menswear designer Adam Kimmel utilized both the screen tests and this ensuing body of photographic material as key touch points in designing his collection. As a testament to the man who inspired the collection, Kimmel asked Gerard Malanga, who now lives in Hudson, New York, to recreate his iconic screen tests, for the first time in forty years, on figures from New York’s current artistic scene.
